Chogyam Trungpa in The Profound Treasury

A nine-day program of meditation practice and study, focussing on Volume Three of The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma, by Ven. Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. The program will be led by Judith Lief, the editor of The Profound Treasury, assisted by other senior students of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Profound-Treasury-Ocean-Dharma-big2The three-volume Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma is based on thirteen years of lectures given by Chogyam Trungpa at the Vajradhatu Seminaries, advanced programs for his senior students. At the yearly Profound Treasury Retreats, students have an opportunity to deeply engage this material in a contemplative atmosphere that includes intensive study and practice.

MEDITATION: The program begins with: a weekend silent meditation retreat. The program ends with another day of intensive practice.

Meditation practice is part of every day, with sessions in the morning and evening. All students have opportunities for individual meditation interviews.

STUDY PERIOD: Judith Lief gives one or two lectures a day on material from the Profound Treasury during the study period.

Students also take an additional class, taught by senior students of Chogyam Trungpa.

TOPICS for the 2017 Retreat

Topics include an introduction to the basic structure and components of a mandala; the mandala of ego and its world; the mandala of awakening or enlightened energies; and the relationship between the two. We will look at the emotions and the ways in which these powerful energies are worked with in the three vehicles of the path. Our focus throughout will be on how to apply mandala teachings in practice and in everyday life.

The Profound Treasury Retreats have included both newer and longer-term students, including some who attended the original programs on which this material is based. The combination of new and old brings fresh energy to the retreat environment. Everyone is encouraged to see themselves as both a learner and a teacher in this community.

In addition to meditation and study, group activities include an opening lhasang, or fire offering, an evening bonfire in the Grove, a spirited “no-talent” show at the end of the program, and a celebratory banquet.

The retreat is led by Judith L. Lief, the compiler and editor of The Profound Treasury. Judy was a close student of Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, who authorized her as a teacher in the Buddhist and Shambhala traditions. She has served as one of his primary editors for over twenty-five years.
